A fruit salad seller in Akure, Grace Olatunji shared her view on how to start a fruit business and how lucrative it is.

“It doesn’t require any training, or a certificate to start this business, all you need to do is get the necessary ingredients (fruits, toothpicks, and takeaway plates) and look for a good and convenient environment to sell your fruits.

“Most people have added fruits to their daily meals and have become a well accepted diet in the society, and there are lots of people who are engaged in this business to cater for their needs. You need to be unique in mixing your fruits for your customers so as lose patronage.

“You must know the taste of your customers so that you will be able to satisfy them. You can use any fruit for your fruit salad but there are some common fruits that people prefer and they are; cucumber, watermelon, coconut, apple, pineapple, pawpaw, berry, orange, grape and the likes.

“Starting the business does not require much capital. You can start a fruit salad business with N5, 000 and above. If you buy fruits and takeaway worth of N2, 000, you will be able to make at least N5, 000 and above from the sales.

“The takeaway plates have sizes, the small plate in a pack is being sold at the rate of N1, 300, while the medium plate is sold at the rate of N1, 500, both having 50 pieces each in a pack.

“Packaging adds value to products, the way you package your products will determine the rate of patronage and it will make the business more interesting especially when it is neat. Most times, packaging attracts customers than the content.

“Some of the Challenges that can be encountered in the business are preservation of the fruits, when there is low patronage, it will be difficult to preserve the leftover fruits and no customer will buy a stale fruit from you and these can lead to low or no patronage.”
